The modern sedentary lifestyle, with prolonged periods sitting at a computer both at home and at work can easily cause us to hold more tension. Even if your workstation is ergonomically designed, this may not mean you are coordinating yourself well. Those of you with desk jobs, working at a computer tends to demand much of our attention, so that we can have less ability to notice how we are responding physically and emotionally to the task at hand.
Do you really want to be there, where you are? That in itself can cause a conflict - staying at your desk when you really want to get up and move. That's a layer of stress and tension right there.
Mobile phones and tablets can throw co-ordination right out the window. Staring at the little lit screen puts an extreme amount of pull on the neck and spine, not to mention our eyes as we attempt to 'see' what's on the little screen, lights glaring brightly. Psycho-physical stress levels rise markedly as our coordination becomes less and less free and more unconcious and habitual.
Alexander lessons can help enormously with these issues. The engaged individual is the focus. The practical nature of lessons will help you find out what is really happening. Lessons will teach you how to respond rather than be in a state of reaction in order to better to your situation.
It's actually possible to sit for a prolonged period of time and feel comfortable, even great! Meditation often requires sitting for longer periods of time and one can certainly go deeper when not distracted by pain.
The body is made to move. We are meant to interact and engage freely. And, I get it, we often don't have that experience on a day to day basis. But why not, I'll ask? And I invite you to ask the same question....and find out. The Alexander Technique could be a solution for you. We want to change the conditions so that pain and excess tension becomes unnessecary.
Lessons help you practice the new approaches with guidance. You can bring your laptop, smartphone or practice desk-work in the context of lessons. Contact me to find out for yourself: 617-290-7102 or www.AlexanderLessonsBoston.com
